A lot has been written in the press recently concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the smoking ban in England. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive tax breaks to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. But does the online variation of this classic game offer a escape, or will it in no way compare to its real life relative?
Bingo is an established game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had witnessed a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo halls rather than the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to change with the enforcement of the cigarette ban throughout Britain.
No more will enthusiasts be permitted to smoke at the same time marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public area will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common places where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo parlours. Numbers have dropped and the business is literally struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they haven’t cast aside this familiar game?
The answer is on the web. Gamblers realize that they can play bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a drink and cigarette and still enjoy massive prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.
Of course betting on online is unlikely to replace the social aspect of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with no choice.
