Will the Anti Cigarette Law in Britain Force Bingo Players On to the Web?

A lot has been reported in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in England. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge aid to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But does the internet version of this traditional game present a salvation, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?

Bingo has been an age old game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had undergone a recent resurgence in popularity with younger people deciding to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the legislating of the smoking ban throughout United Kingdom.

Players will no longer be able to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 all public locations will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where people enjoy smoking.

The results of the anti smoking law can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo halls. Numbers have plummeted and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did the players go? Obviously they haven’t forgotten this classic game?

The answer is on the internet. Gamblers are now realizing that they can participate in bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a cocktail and fag and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.

Of course wagering on on the internet is unlikely to replace the communal portion of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with no choice.
