Much has been written in the press not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the cigarette ban in England. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. However does the net variation of this traditional game offer a reprieve, or might it never compare to its land based relative?
Bingo has been an enduring game normally played by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game lately had undergone a recent return in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo parlors rather than the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to get flipped on its head with the legislating of the cigarette ban all over Britain.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public place will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored locations where players enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the business is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Surely they haven’t deserted this classic game?
The answer is online. People are now realizing that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and in the end, have a chance at huge cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course gambling on online will never replace the social aspect of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of people the law has left many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
