An abundance has been talked in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hit because of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge tax breaks to help keep the businesses alive. But does the web version of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar peer?
Bingo is an enduring game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game recently had experienced a recent comeback in popularity with younger people opting to hit the bingo parlours instead of the bars on a weekend. All this is about to be destroyed with the enacting of the cigarette ban around Britain.
No longer will gamblers be able to smoke at the same time dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public areas will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favorite areas where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Surely they haven’t cast aside this established game?
The answer is on the web. Gamblers realize that they can bet on bingo from their computer while enjoying a drink and cig and in the end, enjoy big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the internet will never replace the collective part of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the law has left a good many bingo players with no alternative.
