Can the Cigarette Ban in the UK Force Bingo Players On to the Net?

[ English ]

Much has been reported in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry being hit as a result of the anti smoking law in England. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big tax breaks to help keep the industry alive. However does the web adaptation of this traditional game offer a escape, or will it not compare to its real life peer?

Bingo is an familiar game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had undergone a recent increase in popularity with younger members of society opting to hit the bingo parlors instead of the bars on a Friday night. This is all about to change with the legislating of the cigarette ban across Britain.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public locations will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most popular places where many people like to puff on cigarettes.

The results of the smoking ban can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlours. Profits have dropped and the business is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Certainly they haven’t forgotten this established game?

The answer is online. People know that they can enjoy bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beer and cig and still enjoy big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course wagering on on the internet will never replace the social aspect of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a group of men and women the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
