Might the Smoking Ban in the United Kingdom Take Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Net?

An abundance has been written in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in Britain. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry alive. However can the online version of this classic game offer a lifeline, or might it never compare to its bricks and mortar relative?

Bingo has been an ancient game normally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had experienced a recent return in appeal with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo parlours instead of the clubs on a weekend. This is all about to change with the enforcement of the cigarette ban all over United Kingdom.

Players will no longer be allowed to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public location will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common places where many people like to smoke.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they have not deserted this familiar game?

The answer is online. People realize that they can enjoy bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beer and cig and in the end, enjoy massive cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course betting on on the net is unlikely to replace the social part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little option.
