A lot has been reported in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry struggling because of the anti cigarette law in England. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge aid to assist in keeping the industry alive. But does the web version of this traditional game provide a reprieve, or will it not compare to its real life opposite?
Bingo has been an familiar game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had experienced a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlors instead of the discos on a Saturday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the enacting of the cigarette ban around England and Wales.
No more will enthusiasts be able to smoke whilst marking numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be allowed to permit smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most popular areas where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlours. Profits have plunged and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Certainly they have not deserted this ancient game?
The answer is online. Gamblers know that they can enjoy bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a drink and smoke and in the end, have a chance at huge prizes. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the internet is unlikely to replace the communal part of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no choice.
