Much has been stated in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the smoking ban in Britain. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested massive tax cuts to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But does the web adaptation of this classic game provide a reprieve, or might it not compare to its bricks and mortar equivalent?
Bingo is an ancient game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had seen a recent resurgence in popularity with younger men and women opting to go to the bingo parlors instead of the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the smoking ban throughout UK.
No longer will players be allowed to smoke at the same time dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public location will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common places where people like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo parlors. Numbers have plummeted and the business is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Of course they have not forgotten this ancient game?
The answer is online. Players realise that they can gamble on bingo from their computer at the same time enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the net can never replace the collective portion of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
