Much has been written in the papers just a while ago about the bingo industry being hit because of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big aid to help keep the industry alive. However will the internet adaptation of this quintessential game offer a escape, or will it in no way compare to its land based opposite?
Bingo has been an age old game generally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game lately had witnessed a recent increase in appeal with younger people deciding to visit the bingo parlours rather than the bars on a Saturday night. This is all about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the anti cigarette law around England and Wales.
No more will players be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public place will not be permitted to allow smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most common locations where players like to smoke.
The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo halls. Players have plunged and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Surely they have not given up on this familiar game?
The answer is online. Gamblers realise that they can bet on bingo from their computer at the same time enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, enjoy monstrous cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.
Of course playing online is unlikely to replace the social portion of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left many bingo players with no choice.
